Algorithm

LOW fear General Audience
A set of step-by-step instructions a computer follows to solve a problem or complete a task.

In Plain English

An algorithm is simply a recipe for a computer. Just as a baking recipe tells you exactly how much flour to add and how long to bake a cake, an algorithm tells a computer exactly what to do with information. They are the invisible rules running everything from your calculator to social media feeds. If you sort a spreadsheet alphabetically, an algorithm is doing the sorting.

Real-World Example

The rules TikTok uses to decide which video to show you next on your feed.
